On this day in 1861, lifeboatman Henry Freeman's decision to wear a cork lifejacket saved his life – but it also changed the course of RNLI history and, in doing so, saved the lives of many more...

With 3-metre seas and winds gusting to 30 knots, Skerries and Clogherhead Lifeboat launched to the assistance of a 10-metre fishing boat that had suffered engine problems in Dublin Bay. Skerries volunteers were first to arrive and found the skipper in no immediate danger. A tow was started and was then handed over to Clogherhead shortly after. As a team, both lifeboats safely secured the vessel in Skerries Harbour.

Brave women are a cornerstone of our charity, so it’s wonderful to see this evocative clip of the dedicated ‘lady launchers’ of RNLI Dungeness Lifeboat station. Women no longer pull out our boats - many are now found on board instead - but in small fishing communities in years gone by, all available men were needed as crew, so women often had to launch the lifeboat, sometimes wading waist-deep into stormy seas. They would then wait for the boat to come home again and haul her ashore. Women's work? In the RNLI, it is never done.

Trapped on the roof of her car with the tide coming in quickly around her and unable to swim, a woman was in urgent need of assistance. Luckily, the alarm was raised and Silloth RNLI launched. They quickly set up a safe route around the car in order to rescue the woman, and a crew member entered the water to aid her to the lifeboat. If you’re heading to the coast, make sure you check tide times before you go and plan your trip accordingly so you don’t get cut off by the tide.

Congratulations to The Mumbles Lifeboat RNLI young volunteer crew member, 17 year old Isobel on completing her first rescue this week! Yesterday afternoon, the Mumbles inshore lifeboat crew were called to assist in rescuing a man trapped by the incoming tide. Isobel was first to the station and the boat was on the scene within 5 minutes. Read more here:

Today marks the 65th anniversary of the sinking of the Princess Victoria. A total of 133 passengers and crew tragically lost their lives. If it wasn’t for the bravery of the volunteer crew from Donaghadee Lifeboat, Portpatrick Lifeboat Newcastle RNLI and Cloughey who launched that day, this number could have been even greater. Donaghadee lifeboat crew rescued 34 of the 44 survivors. On Sunday a wreath was laid to remember those who lost their lives.

From comforting crews after a difficult rescue to helping with fundraising events, we have a lot of four-legged friends at the RNLI! Here's just a few of our dedicated lifeboat dogs.

After a dare from his mates went wrong, a man found himself unable to get out of the water. Having jumped from the cliff into the sea at North Landing he found getting into the water was the easy part, but getting out was another matter. Fortunately, one of his friends called 999 and Flamborough RNLI lifeboat crew were quickly on the scene to help him. On this occasion the man was lucky but tombstoning is a high risk activity with dangerous unknowns such as water depth and submerged objects that can cause injury. Read more about how he was rescued here:
